The lush green playing fields the buildings steeped in
tradition, the brisk winds and Autumn leaves…this is the setting for some of
the best rugby teams our boys have played against, and indeed some of the best
rugby they have played as a team. In its seventh year the TAS rugby carnival
has really made a name for itself as being a quality rugby experience. We were
not disappointed. A trip, dormitory/hotel accommodation and early morning
training sessions are the things that will bring a team together.
Our first game was against Trinity College. We held them out
with relentless defence and some solid go forward to go down 6-0. This was the
lowest score Trinity would be kept to for the day. Trinity went on to be
runners up in the division. Then the boys made their first trip to the
canteen. It would take centre stage for these boys to hit their straps.
That’s right, they notched up their first win against TAS (the hosting school)
on the main oval in front of a hundred or so spectators. Once again their
defence was relenting and some class with the ball in hand by Jack Conlan saw
them get their first points and indeed their first win. Then…a trip to the
canteen. Bishop went down in the following 2 games 6-0, 18-6 to end the day
at which point they took a trip to the canteen. Robbie Deans (Wallabies
Coach) gave all the boys a great amount of his time over the weekend and dealt
with ALL questions very well including “ now that you are coaching the
Wallabies, do you hate the All Balcks” of course he answered with great
diplomacy.
Sunday would start very slowly for the boys. Their physical
lethargy seemed to override their mental capacity to even contemplate putting
on the boots for a 9:00am game. Bright eyed and bushy tailed after a sleepless
night pondering any shortfalls we had as a team, Steven Hill (Coach) arrived
with a couple of slight adjustments and a sense of enthusiasm that seemed to
get this game back on track, and boy did it work. These boys not only stood up
and played a game….they played to win, and they did just that, keeping the
opposition to Nil. Strong performances across the park culminated in some of
the best rugby we (parents, coaches) have seen them play. Full credit to these
boys….then off to the canteen.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank Steven for all
the work he puts into this team throughout the year. I would like thank all the
parents for your support particularly Greg for helping keep these guys in line
throughout the three days. These are the experiences our kids will take with
them forever.
We are looking for a keen camera person for the Gold Coast Trip for social and game based footage. We will also require you to be available to run the lines etc...If you are keen come and see me in the TAS staff room (Mr Blythe)
